Ohio State Skates to 1-1 Tie Against Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Ohio State women's ice hockey team scored a third period equalizer against Colgate to secure the non-conference draw, 1-1. With the tie, the Buckeyes move to (9-3-4, 6-3-3 WCHA) and Colgate slides to (8-6-3, 3-2-1 ECAC).

First Period

In the non-conference series finale between the Buckeyes and the Raiders, Colgate opening scoring in the 10th minute for the Raider's first lead of the weekend. The goal came on the power play as Emma Maltais was in the box for hooking. Freshman Sammy Smigliani put away a back door rebound on Andrea Braendli and Colgate took the 1-0 lead. At the end of the period, the teams were tied in shots, 5-5. Sophomore Eve Savander was booked for holding with 24 seconds left in the period and Ohio State started the second period on the penalty kill.


Second Period

After 40 minutes of play, the score held at 1-0 in favor of the Raiders. No goals were scored in the second frame after six combined goals were tallied in the second period of game one. Ohio State outshot Colgate 10-6 for a combined lead of 15-11. Maltais led the Buckeyes after two with four shots on goal while Braendli tallied 10 saves.


Third Period

The Buckeyes put the pressure on Colgate in the final frame and outshot the Raiders 13-6. With time winding down, Maltais fired off a close-range, no-angle shot into Auby that took a deflection on the goal line to even the score at 1-all. Liz Schepers and Savander were awarded assists on the play. The score held at 1-all for the remaining seven minutes and change to force a 5-on-5 overtime period. At the end of regulation, Ohio State outshot Colgate 28-17 and Braendli tallied 16 saves.


Overtime

Only one shot was put on goal in the five minute overtime period as the Raiders outshot Ohio State for the first time in the contest. With half of the overtime period gone, Savander took her second penalty of the night and the Buckeyes were on the penalty kill for the next two of the remaining 2:35 minutes. The Scarlet and Gray denied the Raiders and added to their combined 16 blocked shots of the day. The contest ended in a 1-1 draw with Braendli tallying 17 saves on the day.
