MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Taylor Heise led the Golden Gophers with four points while her linemates Sarah Potomak and Grace Zumwinkle chipped in two points each as the No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 5-1 win over the Mavericks at Ridder Arena on Friday night.
Minnesota (24-5-3, 16-5-2-1 WCHA) scored twice in each of the opening two periods as Heise scored first before S. Potomak tallied her 17th goal of the season late in the first period. The Gophers doubled their lead with Heise's second of the game and Alex Woken's 15th goal of the season in the middle frame.
Minnesota State (11-17-4, 4-15-4-3 WCHA) got on the board at the 3:17 mark of the third, but Zumwinkle responded with her team-leading 21st goal of the year less than two minutes later to close out the 5-1 win.
"It was a solid effort right from the get-go," head coach Brad Frost said. "We played a great first period, put that on the back burner and then really focused on the second. We had three solid periods here tonight, had a great penalty kill, and stayed out of the box for the most part. It was a complete team win, and we're happy about it and excited to finish the regular season tomorrow."
Sydney Scobee and Makayla Pahl split time in net for the Maroon & Gold. Scobee earned the win, logging nine saves on 10 shots faced, before Pahl entered the game for the final 8:50 and made three saves. The appearance marked Pahl's third career appearance. On the other end of the ice, Abigail Levy made 27 saves for the Mavericks.
The Gophers and Mavericks wrap up the regular season at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday at Ridder Arena. Minnesota will celebrate its six seniors, captain Patti Marshall, assistant captain Alex Woken, Kippin Keller, Sarah Potomak, Katie Robinson, and Sydney Scobee prior to Saturday's game.
