MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team wrapped up its preseason exhibition slate with a 5-1 win over the NWHL's Minnesota Whitecaps at Ridder Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Whitecaps got on the board first with a goal by Jonna Curtis in the final second of the opening frame, but the Maroon & Gold responded with three second-period goals and added two more in the third period. Taylor Heise led the way with three points (2g-1a) while Grace Zumwinkle (1g-1a) and Amy Potomak (1g-1a) each had two points in the win. Sydney Shearen also scored for the Maroon & Gold.

Three goaltenders saw action for the Gophers as Sydney Scobee made four saves in period one before Makayla Pahl stopped all four shots she faced in period two. Alex Gulstene closed out the game with three saves in period three. The Gophers outshot the Whitecaps, 57-12, for the game, and Amanda Leveille made 52 saves for the visitors.


Seven Gopher alums are playing for the Minnesota Whitecaps this season in Nicole Schammel ('19), Meghan Lorence ('15), Sydney Baldwin ('18), Amanda Leveille ('16), Kelsey Cline ('17), Winny Brodt Brown ('03), and Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal ('06), and all seven were in the lineup for the Whitecaps against their former team.

The puck drops on the regular season next weekend when Minnesota welcomes 2018 NCAA runner-up Colgate to Ridder Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. CT Friday, Sept. 27 and 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 28.

The Gophers will raise the program's 2019 WCHA regular-season championship banner before Friday's game, along with doing a Gopher Women's Hockey pennant giveaway and post-game autographs for fans. Friday is Faculty & Staff Day and Saturday is Student Day at Ridder Arena. Saturday's game features a Cub Family 4-Pack ticket package where fans can receive four tickets, four hot dogs, four popcorns, four soft drinks, and $5 off $50 at Cub. Saturday also marks Community Weekend for Eden Prairie, Chaska, and Wayzata.
