BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Minnesota State women's hockey team scored two goals in the third period in the third place game of the Windjammer Classic to gain the 2-0 victory over host Vermont on Saturday.
Freshman netminder Calla Frank collected her second shutout of the season and sophomore blueliner Anna Wilgren scored her team leading third game winning goal of the season to lift the Mavericks over the Catamounts.
The first two periods of the game went scoreless and saw the Catamounts out shoot the Mavericks by a 14-11 margin. The Mavericks found themselves in the penalty box five times through the first 40 minutes, but the penalty kill team held strong by not allowing a goal. Minnesota State had two power play opportunities in the first period, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Wilgren broke the scoreless tie at the 11:06 mark in the third period with her fourth goal of the season. Skating to the bottom of the left dot, Wilgren fired a wrist shot top shelf past freshman goaltender Natalie Ferenc. Minnesota State took its sixth penalty of the game with 2:28 remaining and Vermont pulled it goaltender to go on a six-on-four power play. The MSU special teams came through again, stifling the Catamounts power play. The Mavericks added an empty net goal with four seconds left with sophomore winger Claire Butorac scoring her fifth of the season.
Freshman Calla Frank (4-3-1) made 23 saves and helped stop all six Catamounts power play opportunities in her second shutout of her career.
The Mavericks were outshot by the Catamounts 23-21 in the game. Minnesota State went zero-for-four on the power play and Vermont did not convert on six opportunities.
Now standing with a 7-9-2 (2-8-2-2 WCHA) record, Minnesota State will face #1 Minnesota in the Hall of Fame Classic in Prior Lake, Minn., on Dec. 7 at 3:30 p.m.
