COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 8-ranked Ohio State women's ice hockey team was defeated by the No. 1-ranked Wisconsin Badgers Saturday afternoon, 7-3. With four power play goals on the day, the Badgers concluded the conference sweep. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 4-2-0 overall (2-2-0 WCHA) and the Badgers remain undefeated and improve to 6-0-0 overall (2-0-0 WCHA).
"We're scoring goals on the number one team in the country and finding ways to put the puck past them," head coach Nadine Muzerall said. "We just have to learn from our mistakes."
Ohio State struck first in the series finale between the two Top-10 teams as Liz Schepers fired a quick shot off the offensive faceoff won by Emma Maltais. Her shot sailed past Kristen Campbell's blocker just over 10 minutes into the contest. The Buckeyes conceived four penalty minutes in the first period but the Badgers took advantage of both power play opportunities. Britta Curl and Maddie Rowe each scored giving the Badgers the 2-1 advantage going into the second period. In the opening frame Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 14-6.
This time the Badgers were first to convert in the period as Mekenzie Steffen slotted one past Andrea Braendli. With Wisconsin ahead by two, the Buckeyes rallied and Brooke Bink scored her second goal on the season to narrow the lead to one. Sophie Jaques assisted the play for her fifth assist of the season. Just over three minutes later, Schepers scored her second of the night assisted once again by linemate, Maltais. The score held even at three all for the remainder of the period.
The Badgers came out fast in the final third and once again took full advantage of their power play opportunities. Wisconsin netted two more special teams goals in the final frame and Sophie Shirley and Abby Roque added even strength points for a commanding 4-0 performance in the third. Wisconsin finished the contest with 43 shots to Ohio State's 21. Braendli tallied a season-high 36 saves in the contest.
