Senior forward Ethan Somoza scored in the final minute for the Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Senior captain Ethan Somoza found the back of the net with 41.9 seconds left in regulation and to break a 1-1 deadlock and give the Bemidji State University men's hockey team a 2-1, non-conference victory over No. 5 Bowling Green State University Thursday at Sanford Center.

The Beavers have now accounted for two of the 14-3-0 Falcons' three losses and enter Friday's series finale 3-1-2 in their last six games.

BSU opened the scoring at the 6:28 mark of the first period when a Kyle Looft shot glanced off fellow Beaver Lukas Sillinger. The rookie corralled the puck and fired it past the BGSU goaltender Eric Dop for his third goal of the season. In addition to Looft, Brendan Harris was credited with an assist on the play.

The Beavers lead would last just over nine minutes. With 4:06 to play in the period, Brandon Kruse picked off a BSU pass, skated through the neutral zome and beat the BSU goaltender to send the teams into the first intermission tied, 1-1.

The score would remain tied through 19 minutes of the third period when Somoza found and errant shot stuck in traffic and fired it past a screened Dop for his second game-wining goal in as many games. Ross Armour and Eric Martin earned assists on the scoring play.

Zach Driscoll stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced, which included all 10 BGSU attempts in the third period and he backstopped a penalty-kill unit that snuffed out the Falcons' only power-play attempt, to earn his fourth victory of the season (4-4-2).

The Beavers even their record at 4-4-2 overall and attempt to gain their first series sweep of the 2020-21 season tomorrow when they host Bowling Green for a rare 2 p.m. opening face off.
