Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team made a late charge but fell 4-2 to the nationally #18 ranked Lake Superior State Lakers Friday (Feb. 26) in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Ferris State freshman defenseman Luke Farthing netted his first collegiate goal in the contest for the Bulldogs.
Just 1:59 into the opening period, Farthing and junior forward Jake Transit took advantage of a zone-entry breakdown that left Farthing wide open between the faceoff circles. The freshman ripped in his first collegiate goal over the outstretched right pad of LSSU goaltender Mareks Mitens for an early 1-0 Bulldog lead on a power play. Transit (8) and junior forward Ethan Stewart (8) earned assists on Farthing's goal.
The Lakers evened the contest when Benito Posa tapped in a rebound at 9:22 of the opening frame at even strength.
Late in the second period, Yuki Miura and Posa scored 29 seconds apart at 15:42 and 16:11 for a 3-1 Laker lead in four-on-four play.
Early in the third period, the Bulldogs bit back into the Laker lead when Dallas Tulik scored his first goal of the season, tapping in a zig-zag pattern tic-tac-toe play through the legs of Mitens. Freshman forward Antonio Venuto (6) and senior forward Lucas Finner (9) picked up assists on the goal to cut Lake Superior State's lead to 3-2.
In the late stages of the game, the Bulldogs pulled the goaltender, but Pete Veillette picked off a pass and fired it into the empty goal at 19:13 for the 4-2 final.
Ferris State junior goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 25 saves for the Bulldogs on 28 shots faced. Mitens picked up the win for the Lakers with 23 stops.
The Bulldogs held the Lakers 0-6 on the man advantage and are now 16 of their last 18 on the penalty kill. Ferris State finished 1-1 on the power play. The Lakers had a narrow 29-25 edge in shots.
Ferris State travels up state to take on the Lakers next Saturday (March 6) at Taffy Abel Arena for a 3:00 pm ET puck drop to wrap up their final ever WCHA regular season series.
