Minnesota edges St. Cloud State, 2-1

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's hockey team secured a win in its first home game of the season, beating the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-1 on Tuesday night at Ridder Arena.

The game was scoreless through one period, with neither team generating many scoring chances throughout the first 20 minutes. The Gophers had eight shots on net after one period and the Huskies had four.

Freshman Ava Lindsay scored her second collegiate goal in the second period, assisted by Emily Zumwinkle and Emma Kreisz to net the first goal of the evening. With just 47 seconds remaining in the game, graduate Taylor Stewart scored an empty-net goal to increase the Gophers' lead to two. Shortly after, St. Cloud State found the back of the net and the game ended with a 2-1 score.

Junior Skylar Vetter had another impressing performance in net, making 14 saves and earning her third win of the season.

Quotable
"Great win here tonight, we just grinded it out," head coach Brad Frost said. "We knew it was going to be tough, because St. Cloud is a great opponent. We were very structured and had some great goaltending as well, really proud of Skylar [Vetter], she was amazing. I thought in particular our team had really picked it up in the second and third periods and started to control play."

After scoring her second career goal, Lindsay said that the team's experienced defense acts as a stabilizing force that also makes life easier for forwards like her.

On her goal, she said it was a product of the team executing on what they'd hoped to do in the second and third periods.

"It was a great shot by Emily Zumwinkle, she got the shot through, which was a point of emphasis going into the second period," Lindsay said. "It was a great net-front presence by Peyton Hemp and then I was just able to time it correctly."
