Gentry Leads No. 11 St. Cloud State to Opening Series Sweep Over Lindenwood

Gentry tallies two goals and an assist, 10 Huskies record a point in 6-2 rout of Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (scsuhuskies.com) – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) continued its strong start to the 2024-25 season on Sunday afternoon, beating Lindenwood 6-2, at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo. The Huskies secured a sweep in its season-opening series for the fourth straight season.

Eleven Huskies posted a point with two multi-point performers - fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) and sophomore forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec). Gentry scored the Huskies first and last goal, while assisting on one as well – logging her 18th career multi-point game and fourth career three-point game. It was Sauriol's second career multi-point game.

SCSU outshot the Lions (0-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) 35-22 and went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill today and have started the season going a perfect 11-for-11. The power play went 1-for-3 and has begun the season connecting at a 50% clip (4-for-8).

Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) earned her second win in as many games to start the season. She saved 20 of the 22 shots she faced.

Gentry opened the scoring with an even strength goal halfway through the first period with assists from Sauriol and senior defender Taylor Larson (Nisswa, Minn.). Early in the second period, Lindenwood scored its first goal of the season to bring the game even at one before SCSU responded with a three-goal barrage in just over three minutes during the latter stages of the period.

Sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) started the Huskies run with an even strength goal with 5:40 remaining in the second period – she was assisted by sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvia, Finland) and fifth year forward Avery Myers (Fargo, N.D.). Sophomore forward Greta Henderson (Regina, Saskatchewan) followed Zimmermann's goal up with an unassisted snipe at the 3:08 mark. Just 51 seconds later, sophomore defender Carmen Bray (Nanaimo, British Columbia) scored her first career NCAA goal with assists coming from Gentry and fifth year forward Abby Promersberger (Fargo, N.D.).

In the final period, freshman forward Marie Moran (Lakeville, Minn.) also tallied her first career collegiate goal after she stole the puck in front of the net and put it away. Gentry scored the second SCSU buzzer beating goal in as many days when she found the back of the net as time expired in the game – she was assisted by senior defender Grace Wolfe(Owatonna, Minn.) and Sauriol.

NOTABLES

SCSU is now 18-2-2 all-time against Lindenwood, extending its winning streak to nine games. The Huskies are 9-0-1 against LU in its last 10 matchups and own a 9-1-2 record all-time when playing at Lindenwood.
The Huskies have now swept their first series of the season in four consecutive seasons.
SCSU scored 10 goals in the first two games, matching its total from last year's first series when it won 6-1 and 4-0 over Union.
The Huskies scored six goals for the first time since 2-22-24 at Bemidji State.
The Huskies outshot LU 35-22.
SCSU's penalty kill went 6-for-6 and powerplay went 1-for-3. To start the season, the Huskies are a perfect 11-for-11 on the penalty kill and 4-for-8 on the powerplay.
Gentry posted her first multi-goal and multi-point game since 2-22-24 at Bemidji State. She scored three goals with one assist in the opening series. For her career, she has posted a 49-25-74 line. She led the game with nine shots on goal and was second in faceoff wins (10).
Sauriol recorded her second career multi-point game. Her two points were her first of the season.
Bray scored her first collegiate goal in her 18th career game.
Moran netted her first career collegiate goal in just her second game in an SCSU sweater.
Henderson has opened 2024-25 with a goal in each of the first two games (she scored four goals in 30 games played in 2023-24).
Zimmermann scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career.
Ahola has made 38 saves through the first two games and owns a .950 save percentage while earning two wins with one shutout.
Larson tallied her 10th point as a Husky and tied her career-best, skating to a +2 mark.
Wolfe and Myers recorded their first points of the season.
Promersberger posted an assist for the second straight game and now has 15 for her collegiate career.
Sundelin has recorded an assist in the first two games and now has 10 career points.
Senior defender Ella Anick (Hermantown, Minn.) didn't tally a point, but led the Huskies in blocks (two) and skated to a game and career-high +4.
Fifth year forward Brieja Parent (Forest Lake, Minn.) led the game with 15 faceoff wins.
