After winning the Western Collegiate Hockey Association monthly honors in December, Minnesota's Abbey Murphy and Minnesota Duluth's Ève Gascon earned the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) National Players of the Month honors, the organization announced on Friday afternoon.
Murphy was named the HCA Co-Player of the Month along with Syracuse's Bryn Saarela, while Minnesota Duluth's Gascon was tabbed the HCA Co-Goaltender of the Month with RPI's Reese Keating.
Minnesota's Murphy earned the honor two days after being tabbed the WCHA Forward of the Month for her efforts in December. In the Gophers' only series of December against St. Thomas, Murphy tied her career-high in series points with eight off of three goals and five assists. Murphy tallied two goals and three assists in Minnesota's 5-0 win on December 6 as she notched a point on every Gopher goal in the contest. The redshirt senior forward followed up with a one-goal, two-assist performance in the Gophers' 6-2 win on December 7. The Evergreen Park, Illinois native led all WCHA skaters in assists (5) and points (8) in December. Murphy currently ranks fifth in the NCAA this season in goals per game .89. This marks the first national honor of the season for Murphy.
Minnesota Duluth's Gascon claimed her first national monthly honor of the season after averaging 24.50 saves and recording a 0.961 save percentage in the Bulldogs' lone series of December against No. 8 St. Cloud State. Gascon was also named the WCHA's Goaltender of the Month for her efforts in the series. On December 6 against the Huskies, Gascon helped her team secure the extra WCHA point with three shootout saves in addition to her 27 stops throughout the game. The sophomore netminder was named the WCHA Goaltender of the Week on December 9 for her efforts in the series.
