Wisconsin Defeats Ohio State 4-3 In Overtime To Win Program's Eighth National Title

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -  The Wisconsin Badgers claimed its record-breaking eighth NCAA title after a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The win capped off a historic 38-1-2 season for coach Mark Johnson's program. The Badgers won their fourth NCAA title in the last seven years and eight overall in program history. Wisconsin's eight national championships are the most of any school in the nation.

The opening period saw Joy Dunne score a short-handed goal at the 8:22 mark. The Badgers quickly responded with a goal of their own less than 10 seconds later as Laila Edwards scored on the power-play. The two goals marked the fastest consecutive back-to-back goals from opposing teams in Women's NCAA Frozen Four history. Sloane Matthews found the back of the net at the 14:22 mark to take back the lead for the Buckeyes.  Up one heading into the second period, Emma Peschel scored within the first 10 seconds of play for the 3-1 Ohio State lead. Caroline Harvey pulled the Badgers within one at the 5:27 mark of the second. With 18.9 seconds left in regulation, Wisconsin's Kirsten Simms converted on the penalty shot to tie the game with less than 20 seconds left and send the contest into overtime.  Just under three minutes into the extra period, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Simms scored the game-winning goal for Wisconsin.
