WCHA Recap - Feb 21

Three Western Collegiate Hockey Association squads ended their regular season with a series sweep, while the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers defeated St. Cloud State in the series opener.

 No. 1 Wisconsin 9, RV St. Cloud State 2 | BOX SCORE |  Wisconsin Recap
- The top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers recorded a commanding 9-2 win against St. Cloud State in the series opener as the team improved to 28-3-2 on the season. 
- Charlotte Pieckenhagen scored the game's first goal just under four minutes into the opening period before the Huskies' Sydney Lamb tied the game four minutes later before Kelly Gorbatenko scored with a second left in the period for the 2-1 Badger lead; Wisconsin scored four second-period goals;  Lacey Eden put the Badgers up 7-1 early in the third before St. Cloud State scored their final goal; the Badgers then tallied two more assuarance goals to close out the game 
- Eden scored her 100th career goal in the victory and is the 30th ever NCAA student-athlete to achieve 100 goals; both Eden and Gorbatenko recorded hat tricks in the win. 
- Eden also recorded a career-high five points in the win. 


No. 10 Minnesota Duluth 2, No. 3 Minnesota 1 OT | BOX SCORE 
- Tova Henderson scored the overtime game-winning goal for No. 10 Minnesota Duluth for the second straight game as the Bulldogs recorded the series sweep over No. 3 Minnesota to close out the season.  
-  Caitlin Kraemer put UMD on the board, scoring on the power play with less than two minutes to go in the first period; Bella Fanale tied the game for the Gophers just over seven minutes into the second; after a scoreless third period, the game went to overtime, where Henderson scored the game-winning goal at the 1:47 mark of the extra period. 
- The series sweep marked the first time that the Bulldogs had swept the Gophers since 2017. 
- Minnesota rookie netminder, Layla Hemp, made 24 saves in net for the Gophers despite the loss.

No. 15 Minnesota State 4, RV St. Thomas 3 OT| BOX SCORE | St. Thomas Recap | Minnesota State Recap
- Kianna Roeske scored the game-winning goal in overtime with less than 20 seconds left as No. 15 Minnesota State defeated St. Thomas 4-3 to close out the regular season with a series sweep. 
-  Ayla Puppe scored on the power play to put Minnesota State up 1-0 after the first period; Rylee Bartz tied the game at one in the second for the Tommies while the third saw both teams score twice including the game-tying goal from St. Thomas' Ella Boerger to send the game to overtime with less than 10 seconds left in regulation; Minnesota State's Roeske won the game with less than 20 seconds left in the overtime period. 
- The Mavericks recorded a 3-1-0 record against the Tommies on the season and won 15 games overall, marking the most regular-season victories since the 2022-23 season. 
- St. Thomas outshot the Mavericks 38-21 in the loss. 

No. 2 Ohio State 6, Bemidji State 3 | BOX SCORE | Ohio State Recap 
- The second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes closed out their season with a 6-3 win against Bemidji State for a series sweep on the road; Ohio State finished the regular season with a 34-4-0 overall record. 
- Kate Johnson scored just over four minutes into the first period for the early Bemidji State lead but the Buckeyes responded with back-to-back goals to close out the frame; Raeley Carney tied the game for the Beavers 14 seconds into the second but Ohio State responded with three straight goals to end the period; the Beavers struck early in the third but was not enough as the Buckeyes answered yet again with a goal  from Kaia Malachino
- The win over Bemidji State marked Ohio State's 30th win of the season, as this is the fourth 30-win campaign in the last five seasons for the Buckeyes.
