Four WCHA Netminders Named to Goalie of the Year Watch List

Kirk, Kronish, Soderberg, Vetter Tabbed as Nation's Top Goaltenders for Annual Award Watch List

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Women’s Hockey Commissioners Association has announced a “Watch List” of 27 goaltenders contending for the title of 2023 National Women’s Goalie of the Year with four Western Collegiate Hockey Association goaltenders being recognized.

For their efforts between the pipes, Ohio State’s Raygan Kirk, Wisconsin’s Cami Kronish, Minnesota Duluth’s Emma Soderberg, and Minnesota’s Skylar Vetter were all tabbed by the HCA for the annual honor.

This season, Raygan Kirk has posted a .918 save percentage and 1.85 goals against average through eight starts for Ohio State. She has earned a 6-1-1 record through those games, along with two shutouts, including one against then-No. 10 Cornell, after which she was named to her second WCHA Goaltender of the Week title of the season.

In 15 games played by Cami Kronish, she has earned an outstanding .926 save percentage and a league-best 1.34 goals against average. The stats fuel her 10-4-1 record on the year, where she has earned five shutouts on the year to be named a WCHA Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 21 and earned a No. 1 Top Play on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

A three-time WCHA Goaltender of the Week, Emma Soderberg has registered a league-leading .929 save percentage and 1.69 save percentage in her 19 starts for Minnesota Duluth. Soderberg’s five shutouts have led to her 13-6-0 record on the year, which she kicked off as the league’s Goaltender of the Month in September.

After starting 19 games for Minnesota, Skylar Vetter rounds out the league’s honorees with her .921 save percentage and 1.91 goals against average. Vetter has earned four shutouts in her 13-3-2 record on the year, that has been consistently been recognized with league honors, as she has been named to five WCHA Goaltender of the Week titles and two WCHA Goaltender of the Month awards.

The National Goalie of the Year award was created in 2021 to recognize the top female netminder in NCAA Division I hockey. Northeastern’s Aerin Frankel, who graduated in 2022, was the recipient in the first two years the award was presented. The goalies to watch come from all NCAA Division I conferences with 12 from the United States, nine from Canada, and six from Europe.

Conference offices submit candidates for the initial “Watch List” of outstanding goaltenders before a committee of voters – made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, and media – will pare the list down within the next two weeks before ultimately choosing the winner. The 2023 Goalie of the Year is set to be announced in March during the NCAA Frozen Four.
