WCHA Weekly Preview - Week 11

Five Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams are set to compete in non-conference action this weekend. The upcoming weekend slate is headlined by No. 2 Ohio State and No. 14 St. Cloud State taking part in the D1 in DC event, where they will face ECAC foes No. 10 Clarkson and No. 12 Colgate.

Big Ten Network Matchups: Last week, the Big Ten Network and the WCHA announced two conference matchups will air on the Big Ten Network this season, with Minnesota hosting Minnesota State on Jan. 10 at 7:30 PM CT and Wisconsin hosting Ohio State on Feb. 7 at 3 PM CT.

FACEOFF FACTS
Making Moves: For the sixth-straight week, six of the eight WCHA squads were ranked in the top-15 of the USCHO poll with No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Minnesota, No. 6 Minnesota Duluth, No. 14 St. Cloud State, and No. 15 Minnesota State, which made its first appearance in the poll this season. St. Thomas also recieved votes in the latest poll. 

Capital Clashes: This weekend's action is headlined by No. 2 Ohio State and No. 14 St. Cloud State, both competing in the D1 in DC event, where both squads will face No. 10 Clarkson and No. 12 Colgate at the event held in Washington, D.C.  

Beaver Bites: Bemidji State pulled off an upset over then No. 10 St. Cloud State last Saturday with a 6-5 overtime victory. It marked the second top-15 win this season for the Beavers. The Beavers' six goals in the victory were the most scored in a game this season by Bemidji State. 

Overtime Thrills: Top-ranked Wisconsin defeated then No. 15 St. Thomas 4-3 in overtime in game two of the series with the Tommies last Friday. This marked the first time the Tommies took the Badgers to overtime in St. Thomas' Division I era. 

Herstory Made: Wisconsin blueliner Caroline Harvey reached 167 career points in last Friday's 4-3 overtime win against then No. 15 St. Thomas. With her 167 career points, Harvey tied the WCHA record for most career points by a defender with Minnesota's Ronda Curtin (1999-03). 

Maverick Stampede: Last weekend, then un-ranked Minnesota State recorded a series sweep of then No. 2 Minnesota after winning game one 3-1 and following up with a 4-1 win in game two. This marked the first time since the 2006-07 season that the Mavericks swept the Gophers. 

Shutout Queens: St. Cloud State's Emilia Kyrkkö recorded her second shutout of the season and 10th career win in last Friday's 4-0 win against Bemidji State, while Wisconsin's Ava McNaughton recorded her sixth shutout of the season in the Badgers' 8-0 win against then No. 15 St. Thomas last Thursday. 

Nation's Best: The WCHA is home to multiple NCAA stat leaders this season. Wisconsin's Harvey leads the nation in total assists with 21 while also ranking first among all defenders in points (30) and goals (9). Minnesota's Abbey Murphy ranks first among all NCAA skaters in points with 32, while Ohio State's Hilda Svensson leads all rookies in both points (25) and goals (9). Wisconsin netminder Ava McNaughton leads the NCAA in shutouts with six. 

Standings Shuffle: After last weekend's action, Ohio State moved into sole possession of first place in the WCHA league standings for the first time this season with 32 points followed by Wisconsin (2nd; 31), Minnesota (3rd; 24), Minnesota Duluth (4th; 18), Minnesota State (5th; 15), St. Thomas (6th; 10), St. Cloud State (7th; 8) and Bemidji State (8th; 6).
