Weekly Preview - 2026 NCAA Regionals

Four Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams are set to compete in NCAA Regional action this week begining on Thursday when Minnesota Duluth faces Yale in the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

FACEOFF FACTS
Five Strong: Five WCHA squads were ranked in the top 13 of the latest USCHO.COM poll, with Ohio State taking the top spot, followed by No. 2 Wisconsin, No. 4 Minnesota, No. 10 Minnesota Duluth, and No. 13 Minnesota State. St. Cloud State also received votes in the latest poll. 

BIG TIME BUCKEYES: For the third time in program history and first time since 2022, Ohio State claimed the WCHA Final Faceoff title with a thrilling 2-1 comeback win against top-seeded Wisconsin last Saturday at the 2026 Kwik Trip WCHA Final Faceoff. 

Time To Dance: Four WCHA squads earned a bid into the national tournament in Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Minnesota Duluth. Ohio State enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host and play the winner of the regional semifinal between Minnesota Duluth and Yale. Wisconsin earned the No. 2 seed and will host and play the winner of the regional semifinal between Quinnipiac and Franklin Pierce, which will be held Thursday at LaBahn Arena. Minnesota, the No. 4 seed, will host Northeastern, the No. 5 seed, on March 14 in a regional final at Ridder Arena. 

First Time Meeting: This Thursday's matchup between Minnesota Duluth and Yale in the NCAA Regional Semifinals marks the first time in program history that the two teams have faced each other. Since the NCAA went to a Regional Semifinal game in 2022, the Bulldogs are a perfect 4-0 in the semifinal round. 

Down to Three: The top-three finalists? for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award were announced this past Wednesday, as Minnesota's Abbey Murphy and Wisconsin's Caroline Harvey were named two of three finalists to earn the prestigious award. The WCHA is home to 10 previous Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recipients. 

Best of the Best: Heading into this weekend's action, the WCHA is home to five of the top 10 point scoeres this season in the NCAA as Wisocnsin's Lacey Eden leads the way with 73 points followed by Minnesota's Abbey Murphy in second with 64, Wisconsin's Caroline Harvey in fourth at 61, teammate Kirsten Simms in fifth with 54 and Ohio State's Hilda Svensson in seventh with 50. 

SAVING THE DAY: The 2025-26 WCHA Goaltender of the Year, Minnesota Duluth's Ève Gascon,  was named a finalist for the  Women’s Hockey Goalie of the Year Award. This marks the second straight year Gascon has been a finalist for the honor. Gascon currently sits in second amongst all NCAA goaltenders and first in the WCHA with 10 shutouts this season.
