Mavericks Down Huskies to Open Series

Mankato, Minn. ---  Minnesota State scored three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud State Friday evening at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.  The game was the 100th meeting between the two teams in the history of the rivalry. 
 
The win pushed the Minnesota State winning streak to five games, matching its longest streak of the year.
 
St. Cloud State - which entered the weekend ranked #14 in both the USA Hockey and USCHO polls - cracked the scoreboard first at 1:37 of the first period as Svenja Voight found the back of the net. 
 
The game would remain 1-0 until 13:33 of the second period when senior Kelsey King scored on a one-timer for her eighth goal of the year.  Senior Brooke Bryant won a faceoff second's before King's goal to earn the assist.
 
Minnesota State took the lead for good at 9:13 of the third as junior Sydney Langseth put back a rebound off the stick of freshman Taylor Otremba.  Senior Kennedy Bobyck added the secondary assist on the goal.   The goal was the fifth of the year for Langseth.
 
Senior captain Claire Butorac added some security for the Mavericks as she netted an empty net goal for her fifth tally of the season. 
 
Junior goaltender Lauren Barbro finished the game with 24 saves.  The win was her sixth of the year.
 
Minnesota State (12-11-0, 6-11-0 WCHA) and the Huskies conclude their two-game set Saturday at 3 p.m., at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.
