Chobak shines, strong power play helps No. 15 Huskies blank Bemidji State 2-0

JoJo Chobak stops 32 shots to tie program’s single-season record with her fourth shutout

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Two power play goals and 32 saves from JoJo Chobak guided No. 15 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey to a 2-0 shutout of Bemidji State on Friday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. With their fifth shutout of the 2022-23 season, the Huskies have established a new program record for blankings in a single season.

Chobak earned her fourth shutout of the season, tying the program's single-season record set by Emma Polusny in 2017-18. The junior netminder turned away all 32 shots she faced while making 17 saves in the third, anchoring a Huskies unit that went 3-for-3 on the kill and withstood plenty of time in the defensive zone.

St. Cloud State's power play flashed its strength early in the first period, cycling the puck around on the advantage to the high point. Klára Hymlárová took a shot that was blocked by a forward skating high, collected the loose puck and sent it to the left circle for Jenniina Nylund. The Huskies' top center skated down to the dot and fired a rocket to the left shoulder, finding the back of the net through traffic to make it 1-0.

Leading 1-0 through a period and a half, the Huskies found themselves on their fourth power play of the night. Dayle Ross chased a chip down into her own zone, winning a battle on the boards to get the puck to Olivia Cvar. Skating ahead into neutral, Cvar led a 4-on-2 rush and found Addi Scribner on the backside. Scribner knifed her way into the slot and ripped a wrister bar down past the tender for a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies' kill turned away a pair of Bemidji State power plays in the third, sealing their fifth shutout of the season.

Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski

"I thought JoJo played really well. Getting the shutout was nice for her, but we definitely gave up too many opportunities. She played really well, that was the difference in the game – and special teams. That's been the theme of how the series has gone so far, Bemidji has taken it to us in stretches and we've just been able to capitalize on a couple opportunities to win a hockey game. We'll take the points and get ready for tomorrow."

"I thought we had some opportunities in transition, we just didn't finish off plays in five-on-five. Definitely need to be a little harder to play against, but some of the penalties we were drawing came off of us going to the net, attacking and being aggressive offensively to force them into situations where they needed to pull us down or take a penalty to stop the scoring chance. That was good, especially after a weekend where we didn't have a power play, to have them come out and be able to execute was good for us tonight."

"Puck possession was hit-or-miss. When they were getting us into a jam, keeping us hemmed in and stuck in our own end, we're turning pucks over. When we're clean, can manage neutral ice with some speed and get to our zone entry by skating it in or having a chip and retrieval opportunity, we were good. It's been a point of emphasis. When we struggle, we're struggling with turnovers, not managing neutral ice and we're making the game easy for the other team. Spotty, I would tell you, today."

Quotables – St. Cloud State junior goaltender JoJo Chobak

"You never really expect a shutout going into it. I honestly try not to think about it because it kind of gets in your head when you're going for that. It's really cool to get them – I think it's important that we're capitalizing on these big games and getting ahead early so it can be easier on the back half."

"Seeing the puck has been a huge focus for me. When there's a bunch of people in front of the net, you have to be able to find the puck and see where it's being released. That was one of my main focuses today. The team's ability to clear people out, finding my way around what I was looking at was super important for me."

Quotables – St. Cloud State senior forward Addi Scribner

"D-zone faceoffs is an area we've really been practicing a lot. Just really focusing on getting to the wall and the puck gets out, because that's really on me when the center does a good job getting it and the D does a good job of getting it around. Gentry won a faceoff, Dayle rimmed it around and I was able to read the bounce, went down and wanted to capitalize. I've never really done that even in practice – I just got the goalie to go down hard and had the net open on the backside."
