ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 15 St. Cloud State scored twice in the third period to sweep Bemidji State with a 2-1 win on Hockey Day Minnesota at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies improve to 15-14-0 on the season and have produced the fourth-most wins in a season in program history.
Sanni Ahola made 25 saves to earn her eighth win of the season, stopping all 25 shots in even-strength with her lone goal against coming on the power play. The Huskies blocked 13 shots in front of Ahola, three courtesy of Olivia Cvar with two each from Grace Wolfe,
Klára Hymlárová, Courtney Hall and Regan Bulger.
Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission after scoring early on the power play in the middle frame. A lengthy medical stoppage to attend to a Bemidji State skater early in the third period sent both teams to the locker room.
After returning to the ice, St. Cloud State found an opportunity early in a scrum just in front of the net as Addi Scribner banged in a rebound to draw the game even. 10 minutes later, Courtney Hall collected a loose rebound on the left side of the net and wrapped around to the right side, speeding around the edge to beat the scrambling goalie and wrist in the go-ahead goal.
Following the game, Bemidji State announced their injured skater had been released from the hospital and traveled back home with the team.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"First of all, hope that Bemidji's player is okay. You never want to see a situation where someone is hurt like that – best wishes to her and her family. It's tough to come back and play after that."
"I'm just happy we were able to grind out a win. We weren't super good there for the first two periods, I thought Bemidji wore us down over the course of the weekend by getting pucks deep and forechecking heavy. Our legs looked a little tired there for a while before we mentally got it together in the third. Lucky to get a win."
"Come playoff time, everyone knows who your top players are. People are going to pay attention to them. Ice, time and space get smaller, so you need other kids stepping up and scoring big goals – big grimy, gutty goals. We were able to do that today. Bemidji is one team that is super hard to play from behind against. They defend really well, manage pucks, keep it simple, make you go 200 feet to try and beat them on a regular basis. We were really struggling for big chunks there to get through neutral ice with speed. Being able to manage pucks with short passes and support, turning a lot of stuff over that just got thrown back down at us."
"It's hard to beat somebody four times in a row. There's no secrets, it comes down to will. We had been lucky in the first three games to be opportunistic on the power play. Five-on-five, they're a tough team to come through. They made things pretty difficult for us. Luckily, the forecheck got some energy and some hop and we were able to cash in on a couple in the third."
"The two-headed monster does their job. Sanni saw pucks, controlled rebounds, made some big saves, timely saves when we needed them and did a nice job of managing the game. Both those kids played super well, and that's all you can ask for from your goaltending. I thought they both were terrific this weekend and we need them both to be terrific down the stretch."
