Tommies topple the Tigers, Maurer with 24-save shutout

Mendota Heights, Minn. – St. Thomas Women's Hockey completed their non-conference schedule on Saturday night with a 5-1 record after shutting out the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers 3-0 at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Three separate Tommie skaters scored, one in each period. Allie Monrean got things started after darting off the bench toward RIT's end. Monrean found the puck on her stick and skated towards the slot to unload a wrist shot that beat the opposition's goaltender, Sarah Coe. The goal was Monrean's third of the season and second of the weekend series.

Just under six minutes into the second period, Luci Bianchi turned an RIT turnover on the blue line in the offensive zone into offense on the other end. Bianchi had nobody to beat but the goaltender as she put the puck within the left post and into the back of the net to give the Tommies a 2-0 lead.

St. Thomas' third goal came late in the third period on the power play. Maddy Clough carried the puck into the far corner looking for a teammate in front of the net. She found Lauren Stenslie who, for the third straight game, put one by the goaltender to seal the deal on the Tommies' fourth straight victory.

Saskia Maurer played all 60 minutes in net for the Purple and made 24 saves for the second shutout of her collegiate career.

St. Thomas out shot the Tigers 34 to 24. The Tommies did not commit a penalty and went 1-4 on power play chances with six shots on goal.

The Tommies (7-14-1) head across the river to Ridder Arena as they go to battle with the fifth ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (16-3-2) for a weekend WCHA series.
