COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team took down the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, 3-0, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes (10-1-0, 9-0-0 WCHA) handed the Badgers (12-1-0, 8-1-0 WCHA) their first loss of the season in the national championship rematch.
How it Happened
- Kiara Zanon put the Buckeyes on the board at 13:17 into the first period. Jenna Buglioni sent the puck into the goalie crease where Zanon was there to knock it between the legs of Wisconsin goaltender Jane Gervais.
- The Buckeyes finished the first period outshooting the Badgers, 14-6, and started the second period with 3:57 left on the power play after Wisconsin took a 5-minute major with 1:03 to play in the opening frame.
- It was Jenn Gardiner who found the back of the net for the Buckeyes twice on the power play to start the second period. She scored at :52 and 2:03 to give the team its 3-0 win. Gardiner one-timed a pass from Hannah Bilka over Garvais' blocker for her first goal. For her second , she sent a shot in from the slot that trickled over the goal line.
- Ohio State goaltender Raygan Kirk faced 20 shots and stopped all of them to earn the clean sheet. Her play both in and around the net was key to the Buckeyes' victory on Friday.
Game Notes
- Jenn Gardiner's two-goal game ties her career record for goals in a game. She has tallied 12 multi-goal games in her career.
- The Buckeyes scored two power play goals in a game for the second time this year. The first was in a 2-0 win at Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 14).
- Zanon's game-winning goal is her 11th of her career and first of the season. She continues to lead the team with seven goals this season for the Buckeyes.
- Hadley Hartmetz also added two points on the day, tallying an assist on the first and second goals.
- Ohio State held the Badgers, who were averaging 45.17 shots on goal per game entering the weekend, to just 20 on Friday. The Buckeyes' shutout of Wisconsin is their second in as many meetings in Columbus between the two teams. The last time the programs met at the OSU Ice Rink, Ohio State earned a 5-0 shutout of Wisconsin.
- Kirk earned her second shutout and sixth win of the season on Friday against the Badgers. She is now recording a .936 save percentage this season.
- Ohio State improves to 6-1-0 against ranked teams this year and 4-0-0 against top-five teams.
