ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 12 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (18-16-1, 11-16-1 WCHA) swept No. 15 Minnesota State (15-18-1, 9-18-1 WCHA) with a 5-2 win on Saturday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, celebrating a historic Senior Night by establishing a new program record for conference points earned in a season (36) in addition to matching their single-season record for wins (18).
The Huskies close the regular season with a 11-16-1 mark in WCHA play, finishing fifth in the conference standings – their best regular-season finish since earning the same spot in 2015-16. St. Cloud State's 36 conference points are the most the club has ever earned in a single season while the club's 42.9% points percentage is their highest mark since 2009-10 and the program's best in the three-point era.
Addi Scribner scored twice in the win while Taylor Lind provided three assists to account for a pair of multi-point nights. Grace Wolfe, Courtney Hall and Jenniina Nylund each scored a goal while Dayle Ross, Allie Cornelius, Svenja Voigt,
Klára Hymlárová, Emma Gentry and Regan Bulger each provided an assist.
Sanni Ahola made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn her ninth win of the season. The Huskies won 32 of 56 draws, led by a 14-6 (70.0%) effort from Gentry. Fittingly, St. Cloud State scored first right off an offensive zone faceoff win eight minutes into the first – Gentry won the puck back to Scribner who took one stride right and sniped the top-right corner for the opening goal.
Scribner scored her second of the night three minutes into the second period, taking a beautiful centering feed from Voigt on the right wall and rifling home a one-timer. Nine minutes later, Courtney Hall came crashing down the slot for a highlight-reel one-timer as Lind centered the puck from behind the goal line, pushing the lead to 3-0. Wolfe added the Huskies' fourth of the game just over a minute after Hall's strike, bouncing a shot high off a defender over the tender's shoulder.
Minnesota State scored with just over three to play in the second. Nylund helped the Huskies respond midway through the third, using traffic to score her 14
th goal of the season. A late-third power play goal for the Mavericks cut the deficit back to three, but St. Cloud State settled back in to dominate puck possession and close out the series sweep.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"I thought tonight was a fitting way to send our seniors off. The team played really well, did a great job of staying focused and competing hard for 60 minutes. Overall, a good weekend and a nice effort. We'll enjoy it this evening and start prepping for the first round of playoffs. It's always nice to get a couple of wins on a weekend, number one. We've been in playoff mode for the last three weekends – understanding that we could face Wisconsin, we could face Duluth and how important it was to go out and compete both of those weekends on the road to prove to ourselves that we're in the ballpark. Obviously this head-to-head matchup was for seeding. Duluth got the better of us down in their place, so it was really important for us in the national picture to win two hockey games. Being able to do that was pretty big for us."
On seniors making an impact on Senior Night… "That's always nice. You have your family, you have your friends, you worry about not letting your emotions be too high and not trying to do too much – a few of them on the scoresheet was nice. Nice for them, nice for their families, overall it was a good day."
Looking ahead to the WCHA Quarterfinal… "I'll tell you Duluth is a quality hockey club that defends extremely, extremely well. It was good to get some confidence under our belt this weekend, no doubt, but time and space will be at a premium next weekend – we'll have to be even better to take a win out of there."
On the mentality of the locker room during the final stretch… "The vibe is good. We've done a nice job of trying to maintain our bodies, to keep players fresh and give them plenty of rest. Some of that showed – I thought we had good hop, I don't think our legs were heavy at any point, and that bodes well for us."
Reflecting on the work done thus far by Huskies Women's Hockey… "Obviously, we've made some pretty big strides in – really – a short amount of time. We've exceeded my expectations. That's a direct reflection of that senior class wanting more, daring for more, dreaming for more and putting the work in to get better. Their legacy in what they leave behind…I think it's pretty special. Not many clubs change their fortunes. Not many clubs can do it in a year. For us to tie the record for most wins in program history, that's pretty impressive – that's a direct reflection of the internal leadership and our older players buying in and putting the work in."
Quotables – St. Cloud State senior forward Addi Scribner
On her career year… "The consistency has helped. This is my first year ever at winger – growing up I was never really a wing – but I've had a lot of coaching with that and I've been a wing all year, so having that time to really learn the position and grow in confidence has definitely helped. Things are starting to click now that I understand the structure and system, and we've had a consistent line with Emma Gentry and Svenja Voight. Having that consistency definitely helps all the way around."
On her linemates… "I love them both individually off the ice too – obviously it helps when you're friends off the ice, it's easier to work with them on the ice as well. They both work super hard, make sacrifices on and off the ice to get the job done and that makes it easier for all of us."
"With the final stretch here over the last couple of weekends, obviously going into this weekend we knew how close we are. We're still a bubble team, but knowing we needed two regulation wins to secure it the best we could – that has been a goal for us over the last few weeks, and now that we're getting closer to it it's super exciting. We're getting louder about it in the locker room, and that's why we have been really hammering on our details. That was the main goal this weekend – the conference points, and moving up the rankings."
