Chobak stands tall as No. 14 Huskies shut out No. 8 Wisconsin in Madison

JoJo Choback makes 39 saves in program-record fifth shutout of 2022-23, Jenniina Nylund scores game’s lone goal

MADISON, Wis. – Junior goaltender JoJo Chobak made 39 saves and senior forward Jenniina Nylund scored the game's lone goal as No. 14 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey shut out No. 8 Wisconsin 1-0 in front of 14,430 fans at the Kohl Center on Friday evening in Madison.

The Huskies' win in Madison is their first over the Badgers since February 20, 2015 at La Bahn Arena. SCSU improves to 16-14-0, reaching 16 wins in a season for the first time since 2007-08 and moving the Huskies just two victories away from matching the program record.

Chobak's incredible performance earned the junior her fifth shutout of the season, establishing a new program record. The Chicago, Illinois product made 13 saves in the first, 11 in the second and 15 in the third while anchoring a Huskies penalty kill that went 5-for-5 on the night.

Jenniina Nylund scored the game's lone goal with just under five minutes to go in the first period in the early stages of a 4-on-4. Dayle Ross and Taytum Geier moved the puck ahead to Nylund in a breakout and the latter took advantage of a lane, rifling the puck home with a heavy wrister to quiet the packed Kohl Center.

St. Cloud State weathered three first-period Badger power plays and killed another two off in the second to take their 1-0 lead into the third period. The grit-and-grind Huskies delivered a gutsy final 20 minutes, withstanding 15 Wisconsin shots on goal including two minutes with an extra attacker to completely silence the crowd and finish off their sixth shutout of the season.

Ross and Geier anchored a thin Huskies defensive corps that provided perhaps their best performance of the season. The aforementioned top pair combined for two assists, a plus-two and 14 blocks as both skaters set career-highs with eight and six respectively. Grace Wolfe and Regan Bulger enjoyed phenomenal nights on the second pair, adding a combined nine blocks as the four saw extensive ice time.

Klára Hymlárová gave the Huskies a vintage gritty effort centering the top line and quarterbacking the kill, going 12-3 on draws while blocking five shots and throwing three pucks on goal.

Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski

"I thought we had a real chance to win the game we had lost to Wisconsin in OT earlier this year – tonight was a similar ice sheet so that wasn't a big transition for us. All the way around we played a really good game."

"Obviously they have so much skill and so much talent – you have to try to limit some of their speed to neutral ice and not give them too many odd-man situations. I thought we did a decent job of that. We also needed a good effort in net, and JoJo was very, very solid for us tonight."

"We did talk about the crowd coming in. We had a lot of kids in our locker room who's largest crowd they have played in front of is like 600, 700 people. It's different. We talked about the noise, the atmosphere, just a lot of energy – whether it's for you or not, you can't get too high with it and run around being undisciplined because of the atmosphere. You still have to play your game, and for the most part we did that."

"We just want to compete. That's been our focus. Win our shift, forget it and win the next one. Have a very, very narrow focus – just in front of us. You can't be getting caught up in the big-picture stuff. Culturally we've just been competing shift in and shift out – we haven't talked too much about the bigger picture."

Quotables – St. Cloud State junior goaltender JoJo Chobak

"The biggest thing for me is staying calm and level-headed throughout the game. Especially playing in front of so many people, it's really hard to stay level-headed – controlling your emotions is a huge part of it. Even though we scored one goal, it doesn't mean anything and we have to keep working shift in and shift out."

"The defense did a really great job of keeping shots to the outside. They didn't have a lot of high-quality scoring opportunities, it was a lot of shots but a lot of them were coming from the outside or down the goal line. They did a really good job. There were a lot of times when we needed people to tie up out front, and they did that. They were great."
