St. Thomas grabs two WCHA points, earns shootout win over Bemidji State

Maddy Clough records two points and shootout goal to lead the Tommies

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team earned a shootout win over Bemidji State on Friday evening.
 
Regulation and overtime weren't enough time to decide a winner in the tight WCHA matchup, as game one of the weekend ended in a 2-2 tie.
 
After scoring the game-tying goal, Maddy Clough scored the lone goal in the shootout for the Tommies, helping the Purple secure two WCHA points.
 
RECAP
The first period remained scoreless at Sanford Center on Friday evening. During the opening period, the Tommies added 11 shots on goal, including five on the power play.
 
Through the first 30 minutes of the game, Olivia King totaled 10 saves and the Tommies recorded 14 blocks, keeping Bemidji State off the scoresheet.
 
However, midway through the second period the Beavers scored the first of the night on a 2-on-1 rush down the ice, putting Bemidji State up 1-0.


 
Late in the second period the Beavers were called for body checking, putting the Tommies back on the power play. On the player advantage, Lauren Stenslie tied the game for the Tommies, finding the back of the net off a pass from Maddy Clough.
 
The game went into the final period all tied up, with the Tommies having the slight advantage in shots on goal 19-16.
 
With 8:20 remaining in the game, St. Thomas went on its third power play of the night. Maddy Clough scored her first of the season off a feed from fellow defensemen Nicole Vallario and Haley Maxwell. Clough's first of the season put the Tommies in the lead with 6:36 to play.
 
With 2:20 to go, the Beavers pulled Eva Filippova and played 6-on-5. Bemidji State tied the game once again with just over a minute remaining in the third period. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie, sending the game into overtime.
 
Neither team scored in the overtime period, forcing a shootout to decide the winner of tonight's contest.
 
Maddy Clough scored for the Tommies in the shootout, leading the Purple to a 1-0 shootout win over the Beavers.
