COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State women's hockey team set a program record for goals in a game in its 12-1 win over St. Thomas on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The record-setting performance by the Buckeyes (27-2-0, 24-1-0 WCHA) also earned them their program-record 24th conference win.
How it Happened
After scoring just one goal in the first period, Ohio State unloaded seven goals in the second period and four in the third to take the 12-1 victory over the Tommies (8-23-1, 2-22-1 WCHA).
The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first intermission, with Jenn Gardiner scoring at 4:32 and St. Thomas' Maria Cooper scoring at 14:06. Despite the tie, Ohio State was outshooting the Tommies, 15-4, after 20 minutes of action.
The Buckeyes' scoring spree started with three goals in the first five minutes of the second period. Makenna Webster struck first at 1:50, followed by Jordan Baxter (2:29) and Hannah Bilka (4:49). The Buckeyes went on to score four goals in the last 10 minutes of the second period as Gardiner tallied her second goal of the day at 10:17 and Cayla Barnes (14:17), Joy Dunne (16:30) and Sloane Matthews (19:33) also found the back of the net.
Bilka and Dunne scored 15 seconds apart to extend Ohio State's lead to nine goals 6:32 into the third period. When the first and only penalty was called at 10:23 – against the Buckeyes for cross checking – Bilka recorded her first hat trick as a Buckeye with a short handed goal at 11:38. Jordan Baxter tallied the team's 12th and final goal of the evening at 19:04.
Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele only faced seven shots on the day, stopping six, and picked up her 13th win of the season.
Game Notes
- Jordan Baxter scored her first career goal in Friday's game. She is the second Buckeye freshman this season to record multiple goals in her first game with a goal.
- Olivia Mobley led the team with a career-high tying four points on a career-high four assists.
- Hannah Bilka tallied her third career hat trick in the game. The graduate forward's third goal was her seventh short handed goal of her career and the Buckeyes' sixth of the season.
- Ohio State not only set a program for goals in a game, but also for margin of victory with the 11-goal advantage over the Tommies.
