WCHA Weekly Notes - Week 21

The final weekend of the regular season in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association begins on Friday, with all eight teams in action and WCHA postseason seeding on the line.

The Final Faceoff bracket and participating teams will officially be determined after the eight WCHA programs compete in the best-of-three WCHA First Round on Feb. 28-March 2.

In the Rankings: The WCHA had five teams ranked in the top 11 in the USCHO with No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 4 Minnesota, No. 6 Minnesota Duluth and No. 11 St. Cloud State.  

Final Weekend: The last weekend of the regular season starts Friday,  as WCHA points are on the line to determine postseason seeding. The slate sees two top-ranked matchups with No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 11 St. Cloud State & No. 4 Minnesota vs. No. 6 Minnesota Duluth. 

Huskies on the Hunt: St. Cloud State defeated Minnesota 4-3 on the road last Friday, marking the first time the Huskies have ever defeated the Golden Gophers inside Ridder Arena.  

Hockey Humanitarian: The Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation has named its five finalists for the 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award and Bemidji State’s Kendra Fortin is one of the finalists.

Hat Trick Alerts: Bemidji State’s Morgan Smith recorded her second hat trick on Feb. 15 against St. Thomas and became the second Beaver to record two in a season. UMD’s Clara Van Wieren recorded her second career hat trick in the Bulldogs’ 8-2 win over Minnesota State on Feb. 14. 

Home Ice: Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth, Ohio State, and Wisconsin have clinched home ice and will be the four host sites of the 2025 WCHA First Round begining Feb. 28 and running through March 2.

Stellar Students: On Tuesday, the WCHA announced its All-Academic Team for the 2024-25 Season as 129 student-athletes were named to the list. 

GOLDEN Gophers: With Minnesota’s win last Saturday against St. Cloud State, the Golden Gophers became the first WCHA program to reach 800 all-time wins

Winning Wallin: Minnesota Duluth’s Olivia Wallin recorded six points in UMD’s 8-2 win over Minnesota State last Friday. This marked the most points by any WCHA player in a contest this season.

Assist Queens: Wisconsin’s trio Casey O’Brien (1; 1.41), Kirsten Simms (2; 1.19) and Caroline Harvey (3; 1.09) lead the NCAA in assists per game this season.
