WCHA Recap - Oct. 2

While Wisconsin rounded out its second straight weekend sweep in nonconference play, three league matches kicked off WCHA action on Friday evening. 

Minnesota, Ohio State, and St. Cloud State all remain undefeated on the year and each earned three points to start off at the top of the league standings, all winning by 5-2 margins. Minnesota Duluth looks to bounce back on Saturday from its nonconference loss at Vermont.

  • The No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the young season Friday morning by the hands of RV Vermont.
  • Freshman Marilou Grenier made 24 saves for UMD her first start in net for the Bulldogs.
  • Junior forward Caitlin Kraemer led all skaters with nine shots on goal in the game.

  • Although BU scored first, No. 1 Wisconsin net four unanswered goals, including a trio in the third period, to remain undefeated on the season. 
  • Senior forward Cassie Hall net the first two Badger goals. It's her first multi-goal game of the season, after posting five multi-goal games in the 2025-26 season. 
  • Allowing just one goal against for a .929 save percentage, senior goaltender Ava McNaughton tallied 13 saves. In the series, McNaughton made 25 saves on 26 shots faced to lift the Badgers to a weekend sweep.

  • Greg "Boom" May recorded his first win as head coach of the Minnesota Gophers.
  • WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year Adrianna Milani recorded her first career goal and first career multi-goal game.
  • After Minnesota built a 5-0 lead, Bemidji State answered with a pair of goals for the 5-2 final. One came late in the second period, followed by midway through the third.

  • The Buckeyes improved to 3-0-0 overall on the year with the win in conference action. 
  • WCHA Preseason Player of the Year Joy Dunne led the team with four points on the day (2G, 2A), all of which came in the second period. Dunne marked 16 multi-point games last season, including three of three points or more.
  • Kate Viel is the first Buckeye rookie to record a goal this season and the third to tally a point. She is also the first defender to score this year.

  • Sophomore forward Maria Mikaelyan scored a trio of goals for St. Cloud State, recording the league's first hat trick of the 2026-27 season. 
  • After its sweep of then-No. 7 UConn last weekend and now picking up its first league points of the year, St. Cloud State remains undefeated at 3-0-0.
  • It marks the third straight year that St. Cloud State has started the season 3-0-0.
